The pugnacious receiver announced today this will be his final season.
    Does he have the production?
Andre Reed, Art Monk and Cris Carter are on his list of career comparables.
We're listening to arguments for everybody else who caught 900-plus passes, so why not.

I thought you meant the Hawks/Heat NBA swingman.

    No on him too.

    Explain yourself.

    Nicely argued.
Reads like something the skunk-striped Peter King would decree, without a shred of evidence.

Does he get any extra credit for not only being paired with bad quarterbacks almost his entire career (with the exception of a couple of years of Jake Delhomme) but also being the Panthers' only real receiving threat for 12 years?
The man once caught 87 passes in 2007 from the combination of Vinny Testaverde's 44-year-old corpse, Matt Moore, the shattered remains of Delhomme's psyche, and David Carr, when the No. 2 receiver on the team was somebody named Jeff King (who had 46 receptions). Nos. 3 and 4 were Drew Carter and Keary Colbert.
That's got to count for something.

For a number of years, he was the Panthers' only offensive weapon. He drew triple teams, because there wasn't anyone there healthy enough to run the ball and the other receivers, outside of a random tight end, could catch anything more than a cold.

While we're on the subject of a WR on the fringes of the Hall, it's an absolute crime Cliff Branch (4X Pro Bowler, 3X First Team All-Pro, 17.3 career yards per-catch, 67 receiving touchdowns, 3 TD receptions among three Super Bowl wins) isn't a Hall of Famer.

If Smith has just half his production of last year, he'd finish with 955 catches for 13,792 yards and 76 touchdowns. That would be 15th, 11th and tied for 28th.

If he gets to 738 yards, he'd be the 11th player to have 14,000 receiving yards, assuming Andre Johnson also gets there this season.

  10. Only if Archie Manning gets credit for being surrounded by the Saints ... and whatever opposing defense they were playing that week.

I see what you did there.

But seriously, Smith was an excellent receiver. However, over the course of his career was he ever the best in the game? Top five for an extended time? Top 10 of his generation? Given that his comps in his prime included moss, harrison, holt, wayne, bruce, owens, fitzgerald, ward, andre johnson and probably others that I am not thinking of, it will be tough to make a case for him.

  12. Unless quotes and shit-talking count. Then he's a lock.
