As has been well documented on this board, I have a giant crush on former WNBA star Becky Hammon. Well, last night my girl Becky, who last season became the NBA's first female full-time assistant coach, became the first woman to coach an NBA team to a championship. OK, so it was only the Spurs' Las Vegas Summer League team, but still...

Anyway, the question is this: Is Hammon being groomed to become the NBA's first female head coach? Could she end up replacing Pop when he finally hangs it up?

She'll be the Spurs' coach the day Pop goes to the front office for good.

 

If you can coach, you can coach, man or woman. Ninety percent of the battle is getting a bunch of grown ass millionaires to buy in. San Antonio's team culture may be the one place where it'll work.

 

One problem is the first female coach can't really take over a losing/expansion team as many first- time coaches do, because if the first female coach opens her first season 10-32, that'll be it -- and you won't see another one for 15 years.

Unless the first female coach has absolutely ironclad backing from management and ownership, not too common on losing/expansion teams.

Ownership will have to be willing-- in fact eager -- to massively fine and suspend the first player who tells her to go fuck herself. Because as soon as anybody gets away with it, everybody will try to get away with it.

(It would probably be a smart move for the pioneering team to work out a silent agreement with their best player ahead of time to stage a fake rebellion/suspension-fining/apology and reinstatement sequence -- with the full agreement the 'rebellious' player will eventually get his money back, after he publicly buys in and supports the coach.)

 

Plus, replacing Pop has to be pretty high on the list of "shittiest situations for a first-time head coach."

 

Is the last line for real, or is that from a screenplay?

 

Yes, that was it. Couldn't think of it, that was a kind of forgettable movie.

 

It probably paid for a nice new patio at Rick Fox's mansion. And who could forget Dwayne Schintzius as Ivan Radovadovitch?
