Why hasn't a women's sports league succeeded?

Once again, the "USWNT" is the toast of the nation. Sports Illustrated produced two dozen separate covers to celebrate this collection of All-American gals. Across America, whether it's basketball, softball, volleyball, soccer, or other sports, girls today prefer playing with balls over fixing their make-up.

So, esteemed SJ.commers, why hasn't a women's sports league succeeded? Surely there must be some markets where it would work. Start small. Yet the WNBA is propped up by the NBA, financially. Despite women's soccer's wild popularity, as evidenced by the two dozen SI covers, women's soccer leagues have failed multiple times.

You hear about women getting large salaries in foreign leagues - Diana Taurasi, in fact, skipped the WNBA season to preserve her salary in, I think, Kazakhstan.

So what gives? And will the tide ever turn?

"Women's sports league" ...

 

One possibility: Men, who make up a large portion of sports fans, will not support women's sports. Many men enjoy insulting female athletes and wouldn't be caught dead at a women's sporting event.

A large group of men won't take women's sports seriously. Even here, at a place supposedly filled with sports journalists, threads on women's sports invariably mention looks and cup sizes. Also, for the record, "gal" is freaking offensive, and makeup and playing sports are not mutually exclusive.

 

I'll bet Gina Carano and Ronda Rousey are as famous, if not more so, as any of their male counterparts in MMA.

 

That has not seemed to be the case the last few days. These gals, the ones on Sports Illustrated, they seem to have put that old saw to rest.

 

And that's a good point. Women's tennis is the same way.

So why not a team sport?

I support women's sports, especially after having a daughter. She's got her own pink bat and everything.
