One of three folks in the Lexington Herald-Leader sports department that took buyout offers from McClatchy. A few losses in the newsroom as well.

Mike was a great guy and will be missed tremendously.

The Herald-Leader sports department was pretty thin as it was. Losing those guys is gonna hurt. I don't know how (if?) they are going to cover high schools.

They need to cover it, that's for sure. The official source for Big Blue basketball is the guy in Cal's back pocket. Not that covering college sports wasn't always a kind of celebrity deal at many schools, but it's especially so in that particular context.

According to a tweet from another LHL sports reporter, they're promoting a editor/reporter named Joshua Aaron Moore to cover high school athletics.

Shows how editors are valued these days when you get promoted from an editor to a reporter.

He's been employed at the LHL since 2009 as a part-time writer, copy editor and news assistant, according to this article today.

Fields is a good guy, no ego and a fine reporter.
