Marines planning amphibian assault base in the South Pacific...

    No word on if they're going to sacrifice virgins from Orange County.

    We are returning to our core competencies, one of which is decisive action for the Army. I'm sure the Marines are no different.

    It's still what the Marines are supposed to do. They're the land arm of the Navy. Just because they haven't had to do it in recent conflicts doesn't mean they should ignore the necessity of those tactics.
    Plus, although they didn't do one in the first Gulf War, the mere threat of an amphibious invasion played a major role. The Iraqis were so fearful of an amphibious invasion that they committed almost half their available troops to stopping it. The Marines never did land, but they feinted that they would and kept those Iraqi divisions tied up along the coast for days. That opened the door for the rest of the Coalition forces to surround the Iraqi army and turn the ground war into the rout that it was.

    Didn't the Marines use an amphibious and helicopter landing for Grenada?
