Any South Dakota advice?

The last time I did this, I got pretty good advice from the board...

We're going to South Dakota next month because my 9-year-old has been talking for two years about how he wants to see Mount Rushmore. I know we're also going to Bear Country, the Badlands, some reptile place... Any other musts? We'll be there five days.

I used to travel up there regularly for work and I don't think I ever ventured beyond my hotel and the sports venue.

Any advice would be appreciated... :D

    Does "don't go" count?

Before anyone blasts me, I kid. I've never been anywhere near there.

Stay home and let your parents take care of you.

You can visit John Lennon's birthplace, too.

We only had one afternoon to visit, but I recall my kids (then ages 10 and 8) enjoying the evening program at Mount Rushmore. Going in the early evening provides good light for photos, too.

Had we stayed longer, I would have liked to go through Badlands state park and visited Devil's Tower across the border in Wyoming.

If you do the latter, please don't play with your mashed potatoes ... :D

So I didn't quote it perfectly.

Hill City 1880 train. Prairie Berry Winery in Hill City.

Firehouse Brewery in downtown Rapid. Wall Drug is worth the drive, if only to see the largest collection of schlock in the Midwest.

There's a cool airplane-related museum at Ellsworth AFB. Never been the Journey Museum by the Civic Center, but it's supposed to be nice too.

Drive the Needles Highway in the Black Hills.

The Dakota looks a lot like the Hotel Alex Johnson in downtown RCSD.

Your 9-year-old might enjoy Dinosauer Park and Storybook Island. Rapid City Post 22 has a great Legion baseball team and Fitzgerald Field is a nice place to watch a game, if you're gonna be there five nights.

Meadowbrook Golf Course is a top public course. Canyon Lake Park is a great place for a picnic.

Climb Harney Peak. My son did it as a 10-year old.

Take him to the SD School of Mines and Technology, and get him interested. Grads make a very good living.
