    Description:
The Sun, a family-owned daily located on the Southwest Florida coast, seeks two people to join our team producing a community-oriented sports section: a designer/copy editor and a sports writer.

The designer/copy editor will be responsible for all aspects of producing 3-4 pages daily. Successful candidates will be able to design section fronts/feature centerpieces and special projects immediately. Strong copy editing, page proofing and design skills, using InCopy, InDesign and Photoshop, are required as is command of AP style.

The sports writer will be responsible for generating people-driven stories on activities across all age and competition levels. Our coverage area is home to eight high schools, various outdoor sports, the Tampa Bay Rays' spring training complex and two minor league baseball teams in the Rays' organization.

Candidates should have clips that show an ability to produce feature/enterprise work that utilizes creative nonfiction techniques as well as event coverage that doesn't rely on play-by-play. The ideal candidate will be able to pitch in on the desk if needed. Photography skills and the ability to speak Spanish are a plus.

We are looking to fill both positions quickly.

Send cover letter, resume and work samples to Mark L. Lawrence, Sports Editor, via email to sunsportsrecruiting@gmail.com or to our mailing address: 23170 Harborview Road, Charlotte Harbor, FL 33980. Please identify the position being applied for in the email subject line. Designer/copy editor candidates are asked to identify their samples as being either design or copy editing samples or both.

Application deadline: Feb. 22. No phone calls.

The Sun Coast Media Group is an equal opportunity employer. We are a nicotine- and drug-free workplace. Pre-employment drug/nicotine testing is required.

New (?) posting for a sports designer went up today:

It's 80-plus degrees on Florida's Gulf Coast and the Sun newspaper group needs someone to design sports pages. If you have experience on the sports desk, or if you have mastered InDesign and want to spread your wings and work for a growing newspaper, you may be the person we need. Successful candidates will be as adept with InDesign and Photoshop as AP style and have the clips to show it. While some experience is preferred, candidates from the Class of 2015 will be strongly considered for these entry-level pay-scale positions. Send resume, references and examples of work to John Hackworth, jhackworth@sun-herald.com. Company benefits: health insurance, paid vacation, 401(k). We are a drug and nicotine free workplace; pre-employment nicotine/drug test required..

Would actually think this paper is in a pretty good spot to be around a while. Closest competition is probably Bradenton/Sarasota/Fort Myers. So it's really the only game in town.

It's a great little town, unless you're young and single, as I was when I worked there. It's changed a lot since then, though. Loved driving over to Boca Grande and Englewood. Great little slices of Old Florida.
