This town exists because of NAWC China Lake, a huge Navy testing facility. It's about three valleys away from Death Valley. Interesting place.

Googled the place and saw some images and climate information. Looks like Hell on Earth, or at least the Forbidden Zone on Planet of the Apes.

The first swim meet is 93 miles away, in Palmdale.

Edit: One of their league schools, Phelan Serrano, is 100 miles away. Their closest league school is 92 miles away.

Funny you should mention Planet of the Apes. Some of it was filmed near Ridgecrest.

The Trona Pinnacles were used during the filming of the Planet of the Apes, and that is where they shot the famous Statue of Liberty scene.

I thought that was filmed in Malibu (since there's water there).

I'm trying to find a reference. It might have been in both locations.

The definition of BFE. A quasi-pit stop where the Sierra Nevada end/begin for the L.A. folks on their way to Mammoth, but lacking an In-N-Out (last time I checked) and certainly no Bun Boy (ala Baker on the way to Vegas).

30 miles from Trona, which a quarter-century ago, a CIF official said, "It's not the end of the world, but you can see it from there."

A couple of Star Trek movies were filmed there as well.

Ah, Trona. A long bus ride, a sand field and a playoff flop -- good times.

The 2001 Planet of the Apes was horrid.
