Inequality has actually lessened since the recession

Boy that's a real contradiction to the liberal meme

    The story notes that.

But it also notes that it's a contradiction to the conservative meme that government policies don't work.

That's not a government policy, Boom. It's a failed business model by a health co-op.
The most interesting part of the story to me is that it acknowledges the effectiveness of the Obama administration's handling of the economic crisis and the ability of policy intervention to alter the trend. Makes me wonder how much better still the situation might be if we hadn't had a GOP congress trying to thwart every measure taken.

Unbelievable! When you take into account transfer programs, inequality's not nearly as big a deal as has been made out! I am gobsmacked!

If only someone had thought to consider that ... [/shakingmyhead]

You can be sarcastic about it being obvious, but conservatives argue the the point vigorously that progressive income taxes help the poor.

You're misreading the article if your take away is that "inequality's not nearly as big a deal as has been made out."

I guess this issue is no longer "the defining issue of our time"

"The basic bargain at the heart of our economy has frayed,” Mr. Obama said. He repeated later in his speech that “the combined trends of increased inequality and decreasing mobility pose a fundamental threat to the American dream, our way of life, and what we stand for around the globe.”

    Why is that?

It's Elizabeth Warren's issue. And, as an outsider, she could run on it.

But, as a part of the administration, Hillary can't run on it. She's running for Obama's third term, and if the condition only worsened on their watch, then she's probably not the person to hire to fix the problem.

So, now as we gear up to the 2016 election, we've go to flip the script.

Progress is being made. It helps Hillary, and robs Warren of her main issue.

    Perfect.

Haven't read it yet, but isn't this logical? The recession hits the richest hardest in terms of raw numbers (not lifestyle impact) bringing the top down faster than the bottom. Growth will always expand the gap. If everyone gets a 50% raise, you've expanded the income gap, no?
