Is this to replace Jason Mastrodonato or complement him?

My guess: to replace him. Hard to imagine them having two full-time Red Sox beat writers. Also, they probably would've mentioned the hire would be working in conjunction with the beat writer if the hire would be working alongside the beat writer.

The verdict is in: Mastrodonato is switching over to the Herald.

Per a blog post on ESPNBoston.com by Gordon Edes, who was running down the media presence at ST:

"The Herald has added Jason Mastrodonato, who last season covered for Masslive.com. Jason joins Scott Lauber and Michael Silverman, with Steve Buckley and Ron Borges the columnists. .... Jen McCaffrey is in Fort Myers covering spring training for Masslive.com and looms as a logical successor there."
