Reinstating the wins is almost as meaningless as vacating them in the first place.

 

Bullshit -- the whole reason Paterno covered it up for a decade was precisely so he could get the all-time wins record.

 

Crafting the sanction to Paterno's motivations is just ridiculous. He's not the NCAA's child who needs to be taught a lesson going forward. Either it is sanctionable in this manner independent of him, or it's not. It doesn't seem like an appropriate penalty to me.

 

Paterno protected it for decades to protect that preserve that perfectly cultivated image of, "We're not some thug factory like Miami or Oklahoma. We do things with honor and dignity here. It's the Penn State way." They certainly weren't winning National Championships anymore so that's all they had left.
